This is an early concept sculpt sheet for the arms dealer character in our film. I will refine this sculpt more before Retop.

This is the concept art for the arms dealer in the film. I have based his overall design on a rat, to portray his greedy nature.

This is another environment concept I worked on for Hunting Gatherers. This one shows the mysterious misty forest surrounding the stone circle.

These are some of my concept sculpts for the tall hunter-gatherer character in Hunting Gatherers.

Here are early Character Sketches and Developement Concepts of the Hunter-Gatherer characters I worked on for the film.

Recently I have been working on my Final Year 3d Animation project;  Working title - Hunting Gatherers. The story is set in an around a mysterious neolithic stone circle and follows two knuckle dragging hunter-gatherers who come across a strange arms dealer.  This is an environment concept I did for our film.

Sticks And Stoves:Look Dev

Over the past few days I have been developing the look of our film. My knowledge of rendering has been quite poor, however after constant tests I have learnt a lot. I rendered the following turntables using Arnold. The Devil features a bump map, diffuse map and a displacement map.
Here is the girl Look dev render. She features a diffuse map and an aiStandard rim shadercan be found here: https://support.solidangle.com/display/mayatut/Rim+shader.
I will try to replicate this effect later using Nuke as it could reduce render times.
For higher res versions of these turn arounds visit my website: http://darren-beattie.4ormat.com/showreel#1

Sticks and Stoves:Texturing

Here is the a screenshot of the zbrush sculpt I was working on.

Here is the displacement map I genterated from Zbrush and the Diffuse texture I made using the values of the displacement. Unfortunately when I exported the zbrush displacement some Uv faces were removed from the texture so I corrected this by repainting it's values in mari.

Sticks and Stoves:Texturing

Here is a finalised version of the devil textures. I've added markings on the character and added more detail to the face to make him look more menacing. I've also made a bump map and I'm currently working on a zbrush sculpt of the horns.

Sticks and Stoves: Texturing

Here are the base devil textures that I have been working on. I used mari so the Textures are divided between 6 Udim tiles allowing me to get more detail in some areas. I've chosen to make the textures look grainy and painterly to add an old-fashioned aesthetic to the artstyle.

Sticks and Stoves: Update

We have been working hard to Uv the models so that I can texture them in time for the Alpha submission. Abdul Is now concentrating on the devil rig for use in animation: Here is an example of his work.

Stick and Stoves: Modelling, Texturing

Here is Chris's original model for use in Production. Unfortunately some aspects weren't quite right compared to the concept and the typology wasn't suitable for production. So I remodelled It to suit my vision for the film. Here is the Updated version of the girl mesh along with the devil Mesh I modelled earlier.

In the meantime Abdul has been researching rigging and modelling aspects to the environment.

Sticks and Stoves:Concept art: Devil

For the devil design I wanted to create a character that was both menacing and clumsy. My mind was constantly draw to the Vampire Nosferatu and I thought that a design similar to him would be relevent to the German expressionist style of the film. Here are some quick Thumbnails for the character
Here is the final rendered version of the character I produced to give the team an idea of colour and atmosphere. While I was producing concepts, Chris started work on the girl model based on my concept design, whilst abdul researched particle simulations for use in fire.

Sticks and Stoves: Concept Art: Environment.

Here is an environment concept that I did for reference. I wanted a twisted and distorted aesthetic to it in order to provide a contrast to the girls innocent simplistic look.

Sticks and Stoves:Concept art: Girl

Here are some early sketches of the girl from our film. Chris and I both worked on these designs

Here is the concept art I created for the girl . It was based on an early sketch by Chris which I adapted to sketch no.5 seen above. I took his idea then rendered it in a style that I thought suited the tone for our film.

Short FIlm:Sticks and Stoves: Previs

Before production we had gathered our Pre prodcution documents from last semester in hope of producing a film based on our ideas. After various adaptions of the source material we came up with the idea for "Sticks and Stoves" working title. This idea is vastly different from the work in our pre-production work so it meant that I had to re-concept the entire film from again.

Synopsis: A whimsical  little girl stumbles across a ouija board hidden in the attic. Upon interacting with it she incidiently summons the devil, however when the ouija board is in the wrong hands it's power can be turned against anybody, even the devil.

Firstly, we filmed a maquette for use as reference in the previs. I directed the footage because my knowledge of composition was most suited to the task. My team members acted in the footage, and then chris did a great job at editing it.

The following weekend I modelled a proxy mesh for the devil, Abdul modelled the environement and chris modelled the girl. Abdul then made a basic rig for the characters and chris animated and edited the previs footage. In the meantime I was producing conept art for the characters and the environment.
